By adopting such a scheme, Kamm has not only created one of the most good-looking jet fighters of the period, but also to make room for the accommodation of large fuselage fuel tank. While at first the aircraft under the designation R.1040 designed for the Royal Air Force, with the advent of the airplane, "Sea Hawk" Air Force decided to wait for the plane Hunter.
A modification of the first production aircraft F 1, differed folding wing of increased span and other equipment naval appointment was transferred to the Air Force fleet in March 1953 years. Orders for the aircraft amounted 151 instance, most of which was built by "Armstrong Whitworth." After delivery of the aircraft 95-F 1 production shifted to the first modification of the F 2 (40 airplanes) and then to modify the F 3 (116 aircraft) equipped with bomb racks. This was followed by new versions - 90 aircraft FGA 4 and 86 aircraft FGA 6, as set out in the Air Force fleet. Many early aircraft modifications FB 3 have been converted into a modification of FB 5, while the aircraft modification FGA 4 altered to modify FGA 6.
