State Department approves missile sale to Taiwan

A possible sale to Taiwan of 100 anti-radar missiles and 200 anti-aircraft missiles has been approved by the US State Department, the agency's Defense and Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement.

The State Department approved the sale to Taiwan of 100 AGM-88B High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARMs) and 200 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs). It is also expected to sell 23 HARM training missiles, four AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM guidance units, 26 multipurpose launchers 26 LAU-129 and other related equipment.

The estimated value of the deal is $619 million. The agency's message says that the deal is in the national, economic interests of the United States and their security. It will help modernize the buyer's armed forces and its defenses. Therefore, Taiwan will be able to strengthen its security and the security of the region as a whole.

Separately, the agency noted that the supply of missiles would not upset the military balance in the region.

The executors of the contract should be Raytheon Missiles and Defense and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry has already managed to thank the US administration for its commitment to the declared principles of supporting the island. According to the agency, this could be the first arms shipment from the United States in 2023 and the ninth arms sale during the presidency of Joe Biden.
