The development of the Socata ST-10 Diplomate aircraft began in 1965, while French aviation engineers tried to create a popular light-engine aircraft that could compete with American-made aircraft, in particular Piper, Beechcraft and Cessna, and the design itself was carried out on the basis of another, earlier models - Socata GY-80 Horizon. His first flight of the aircraft Socata ST-10 Diplomate made in November 1967 years, but he could not initially meet the Socata company's management, which is why more for almost year and a half been crafted, yet ultimately failed to slightly increase the reliability of the aircraft, and to improve its flight performance.

The first prototype Socata ST-10 Diplomate had a piston engine with a capacity of 145 hp, however, due to the fact that with a full load of the aircraft, the flight speed was minimal, it was subsequently decided to improve the power plant, which is why the basic production version received four-cylinder aircraft engine Lycoming IO-360-C with a capacity of 200 hp, allowing the aircraft to accelerate to 280 km / h. (maximum flight speed) and cover even long distances on the way, taking into account the aircraft class.

On board the Socata ST-10 Diplomate can accommodate up to four people - a pilot and three passengers, thus, the plane itself is quite suitable to overcome with its maximum load of distances up to 1200 km, which is very effective.

A distinctive feature of the aircraft Socata ST-10 Diplomate from the previous version are improved aerodynamic shape, due to which, and managed to reach a top speed of flight and minimize drag.

However, because of the number of admitted shortcomings in the design and development of the aircraft, the aircraft was unable to gain a lot of popularity. The biggest problem is the fact that the aircraft was not suitable for the transportation of goods, and was not quite maneuverable, but in general it is quite satisfied the private owners.

For the entire period of production of Socata ST-10 Diplomat aircraft, which lasted from 1969 to 1974, only 55 aircraft were built, of which 37 aircraft are currently in operation, most of which are located in France and Germany.
