Built by "Curtiss» (Curtiss) in accordance with the requirements of the US Army to two-seater reconnaissance aircraft, issued by the company at the end of 1930-ies. «Aul» (Owl - night owl) was a very efficient aircraft with good maneuverability at low speeds and with good landing characteristics, it is a prerequisite for the use of the machine for close air support to the army.
Obtained from the model designation 85-metal aircraft with fabric covering airfoils uses automatic slats across the wing span, working together with the flaps having a large scale in order to achieve the maneuverability at low speed. The observer was armed with a machine gun 7,62 mm, while the pilot could shoot from a stationary machine gun the same caliber. In 1939 the aircraft was ordered by the US Army.
Aircraft 1940 203-0 «Aul» was built with 52 years. Although none of the aircraft is not really got to the front, 19 these aircraft were transferred to the Soviet Union (Lend-Lease to the USSR sent 30 machines, but to the Soviet coast came only 19). Military career airplane 0-52 was short, because in 1942, in fact, all the planes "Aul" removed from service.
