"Mosquito Aviation" and AON: comparison, characteristics

It would seem, what connection between military assault aviation and general aviation? We must immediately make a reservation that we are talking about light assault aviation, which, incidentally, we do not have in Russia as a class, unless we take into account helicopters direct support on the battlefield. But they are difficult to attribute to light assault aviation. Heavy multipurpose combat complexes are expensive and expensive, and are equipped with very expensive weapons.

So where does the ANI come in? I will try to explain below

Recently ended the next showroom in France. I myself was not in Le Bourget. I looked through the results of the exhibition, and a list of exhibition exhibits from all countries. The attitude of the West to Russia, at this exhibition has become clearer than ever. Even during the Cold War, this was not the case. Not a single full-scale exhibit. It is not very trusting officials who say that we, they say, did not themselves put out full-scale equipment in order to avoid arrests and so on. But it's not that.

Nothing practically new, neither in military, nor in civil aviation, was represented by the West. But there was a whole series of aircraft so-called "Mosquito aviation" Or anti-guerrilla aviation.

Mosquito Aviation

  • The term "Mosquito aviation" Appeared in 1942 year. After the Great Patriotic War in the German archives, reports were found from the front, where the military actions of our By-2 were called "mosquito strikes", the planes and regiments themselves were called "mosquito aviation". It should be noted that point-like attacks were used not only by Po-2, but also from UT-1 and UT-2 countries, driven from the aeroclubs. They were armed with SKASs, beams under RS, and they flew not only as educational or connected, but also carried out combat work.

"Mosquito Aviation" and AON: comparison, the characteristics of 1

The wide distribution of "mosquito aviation" has received in a number of local military conflicts of the twentieth century. Including, in the anti-guerrilla war in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. And it was not always the case that many countries did not have a "big" military aircraft. More often than not, the use of light piston airplanes, hastily redesigned for attack aircraft, was conditioned by the type of tasks performed. And this is the destruction of small groups of partisans, caravans with drugs, bandit formations. And in a jungle or desert environment. In such conditions, you need visual contact with the target, the simplest and most reliable sighting and navigation equipment, low speeds, a long duration of patrolling. And most importantly - the simplicity and unpretentiousness of the aircraft in service, its light weight (compared with the "older" brethren) and the cheapness of the aircraft itself of its ammunition and its operation.

  • By the way, during the war in North Korea On-2 continued their career of "mosquitoes." And what is most interesting, Yak-18 attracted this work! Over time, point attacks, which, although not causing significant harm, began to exhaust the American troops. Constant chirping in the night sky above the positions and in the rear of our engines got the enemy worse than the usual daily bombardment.

Nowadays, when international terrorism intensifies, when the entire Middle East and part of Africa are mired in local conflicts of tribes and confessions, when the flow of narcotraffic flows to Europe, the role of light assault aviation as never becomes significant.

Of course, it's nice to read that our VCS struck targets in faraway Syria. But when you find out that you raised Tu-160 for this, or you let expensive missiles with submarines or ships, you involuntarily think about it, and for what purpose did they beat such expensive clubs? Dugout of the field commander IGIL? A caravan of five jihadjips equipped with ATGMs or DShK? Could there be a pair of L-39 or more lightweight piston planes out there?

(About the use of L-39 against IGIL can be read here)

  • At the beginning of 80-ies I wrote a magazine «Interavia », And in it every year published the air force of all countries of the world. And so, when the turn came to the USSR Air Force, I was surprised to see Yak-52 in our ranks! Yes, they were considered to be light attack aircraft with NURS units. When I brought the magazine to the air link of our flying club, we all, cadets, were very much bewildered by this fact, although they did not believe the "bourgeois press". And only our instructors, slyly smiling, listening to heated arguments.

Everyone remembers well the fact that our valiant strategists from the Defense Ministry have successfully missed the opportunity to understand and develop their own unmanned aircraft. What we have learned from this, we also know very well. Did it happen that UAVs were going to buy in Israel (or did they buy it?). So, it seems to me, the situation with UAV can repeat, only in the case of light assault aviation.

The Turks and Bulgarians are ahead of us

In Le Bourget, the Bulgarian aircraft construction company Light Armed Surveilance Aircraft Engineering LASA deployed a light T-Bird attack aircraft based on a light agricultural aircraft with Truch510G.

The Turks were the first prototype of the Turkish Aerospace Industries TAI, based on their own training and combat Hurkus-C.

Americans on the basis of the famous Air Tractor aircraft quickly built an reconnaissance and strike aircraft AT-802L.

Light, simple, cheap piston airplanes Russia does not produce. The only exception could be Yak-152, but its future fate and integration into VKS is still under big question. There were loud reassurances (back in 2015 year) of big ranks about mass procurement for VCS, and even for DOSAAF, about launching the series. But…

And Russia brought to the most famous and significant aviation exhibition only mock-ups. We were afraid that customs officers of France would take away our equipment from us! So the only Russian aircraft SSJ100 was a Mexican airline. It's sad all this.

And what does the AON have to do with it?

Yes, in conclusion I would like to convey my main idea: what does small aviation have to do with it? What is the relationship with light assault aviation?

Yes, everything is very simple. Any pilot of small aircraft flying not only Cessna, but also other types of light piston aircraft, is a ready pilot for assault aviation. He has the skills of piloting in the SMU, he can fly by PVP and IFR, on the map and navigator, along the route, can sit on difficult areas and patches. In general, to take a course of combat use and acquire skills in gun control, and a combat pilot for "mosquito aviation" is ready.

But it seems that Russia does not need "mosquito aviation", not even pilots for it. But only when it's too late, we'll ask for more help from the "brothers" from Bulgaria, well, or from the Turks. There is no prophet in his own country.

Despite the fact that such an aircraft can be knocked down from a machine gun mounted on a jeep, however, it is economically advantageous to use light aircraft for carrying out secondary tasks. After all, a raid on a convoy of five jeeps and one truck hits its pocket, if you raise the jet aircraft (as far as I know, by the rules it is necessary to raise the link for the performance of the combat mission, and this is hundreds of thousands of dollars). So the use of piston aircraft at the front can be found.

What flight characteristics and
At the same time to have modern weapons
Must possess piston aircraft in order to carry out their tasks when it is not to be shot down yet on approach

What is the chance to survive the modern war in the combat flight of the "mosquito aviation" aircraft?

And it is necessary to risk flight composition, directing it to attack jeeps from the DShK?
