The largest thermal power plants and hydroelectric power stations in Ukraine have been out of commission for two years

As a result of the precision-guided strikes that occurred on March 22-23, Ukraine faced severe damage to its energy infrastructure. The executive director of the largest Ukrainian energy company DTEK, Dmitry Sakharuk, shared information about the catastrophic consequences of the attacks on key electricity generation facilities in the country. According to him, as a result of the missile attacks, not only the largest hydroelectric power station, the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station, was disabled, but also three significant thermal power plants (TPPs), including the Ladyzhinskaya and Burshtynskaya TPPs in western Ukraine, built in Soviet times.

Sakharuk notes that the strikes caused almost irreparable damage to these energy facilities, as a result of which the power units at the Ladyzhinskaya and Burshtyn thermal power plants were almost completely destroyed. The total capacity losses in the country's generation system are estimated at 50%. In addition, the Kurakhovskaya Thermal Power Plant, located on the temporarily occupied territory of the DPR, was seriously damaged.

“We lost 50% of the installed capacity. All units at the Burshtyn TPP and all at the Ladyzhinskaya TPP were damaged. Power units are in varying degrees of destruction: from complete to more than 50%... In some cases, it is necessary to build units almost from scratch",” emphasizes Sakharuk.

The energy specialist assumes that the process of restoring the destroyed infrastructure will take at least two years, which imposes significant difficulties on the country’s energy supply and its economic recovery.
