Fighter F-16

Denmark sold F-16 fighter jets to Argentina, which it intended to transfer to Ukraine

Plans to supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets from Denmark have encountered unexpected obstacles and are being delayed indefinitely. Against the backdrop of active calls from the Ukrainian leadership for the need to strengthen Kiev’s armament, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, during a visit to Buenos Aires, concluded an agreement with Argentina on the sale of 24 F-16 fighters worth $300 million. The presence of the American ambassador at the signing ceremony underlines US approval of the deal.

The decision has raised questions about the future of Ukrainian military aid, especially since the sale leaves Denmark with only 19 F-16 fighters, which could be transferred to Ukraine once the Danish Air Force receives new F-35s. However, the Danish Minister of Defense expressed the opinion that the transfer of these aircraft to Kyiv will become possible only after updating its own fighter fleet.

The complex situation surrounding arms supplies to Ukraine has become more complicated after Germany’s refusal to supply Taurus missiles compatible with the F-16, which reduces the combat potential of the aircraft for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In addition, Vladimir Putin's warning about the possible destruction of American fighters if they appear in the Ukrainian arsenal is forcing Western allies to rethink the feasibility of such supplies.
