The NASAMS air defense system could use the APU to ambush Russian planes and helicopters in the Bryansk region

Ukrainian air defense system NASAMS could shoot down planes and helicopters over the Bryansk region.

On May 13, four aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces were shot down in the sky over the Bryansk region of Russia, including two Mi-8 helicopters, a Su-34 fighter-bomber and a Su-35 fighter. All crew members were killed in the incident. This became the basis for a discussion among experts on how an ambush could have been organized by the enemy and how to avoid similar cases in the future.

Many experts suggest that the Armed Forces of Ukraine could use the mobile Norwegian-American NASAMS air defense systems against Russian aircraft. They believe that this system is most suitable for such actions, unlike the American Patriot air defense systems, which are too visible a target and would be detected quickly enough. It is known that the Ukrainian command received at least one full-fledged NASAMS SAM battery supplied by the United States in the fall of 2022.

NASAMS air defense systems can hit targets at a distance of 20 to 180 km, depending on the characteristics of the used anti-aircraft missile guided missiles (SAM). The battery consists of three fire platoons: 12 launchers with 6 missiles each, 3 radar stations and an NTAS optoelectronic guidance system. The Norwegian Tracking Adjunct System (NTAS) target detection system allows you to work in conditions of strong radio interference and with the radar turned off, detecting aircraft at a distance of tens of kilometers and transmitting data for launching missiles. However, a little earlier in Norway they announced that Ukraine received not a battery, but several launchers, which casts doubt on this version.

Due to the lack of official comments, it is not yet possible to determine the real circumstances of the loss of four sides at once.
