The rapid expansion of the fleet of nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy scares the US and NATO

Russia is rapidly expanding its fleet of nuclear submarines.

Russia is one of the leading world powers in the field of submarine strategic nuclear technology. The country has one of the largest submarine fleets in the world and continues to build up its capabilities in this area, which is causing concern in the US and other Western countries.

The main concern was the new Russian Poseidon nuclear torpedoes, which were introduced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018. These torpedoes can carry nuclear charges and are intended for use on special-purpose nuclear submarines, such as the Belgorod nuclear submarine.

"Poseidon" has a length of about 20 meters and has a range of independent movement of at least 10 kilometers. Russia announced the production of the first batch of such torpedoes in mid-January 000.

In addition, Russia will begin construction of a full-fledged infrastructure to accommodate special-purpose submarines armed with Poseidons in Kamchatka by early 2024. This indicates Russia's intention to deploy its submarine nuclear capabilities in the Pacific Ocean and strengthen its military capabilities in the region. It is reported by "NewsWeek".

The use of Poseidon super torpedoes can serve to carry out attacks on NATO countries and other US allies that now support Kyiv in its military operations against Russia. In this regard, the United States is monitoring the preparation of the Russian fleet for a possible test of new nuclear torpedoes in the Arctic Ocean.

The situation with nuclear torpedoes "Poseidon" causes great concern in the world community and emphasizes the need for cooperation between countries to prevent a new arms race and maintain peace and stability in the world.

Michael Petersen, head of the American research center RMSI, spoke of Russian submarines as a critical issue facing the United States. According to him, there are clear signs of an increase in the deployment of Russian nuclear submarines off the coast of the United States and in the Mediterranean Sea. He also said that this increase in Russian military activity is in many ways comparable to the actions of Soviet submarines during the Cold War.

The Western non-profit organization Nuclear Threat Initiative notes that the Russian submarine force has undergone significant modernization in recent years and currently has about 58 submarines of various classes. It is one of the largest submarine fleets in the world, although, according to Newsweek, the US fleet has a total of 64 submarines, all of which are nuclear-powered, however, not all US nuclear-powered submarines are on alert. In addition, the US is also facing challenges in modernizing its submarine forces.
