Poland officially changed the name of Kaliningrad - now it's Krulewiec

Poland renamed Kaliningrad to Krulevets.

The Polish Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names Outside the Country, operating under the Main Geodetic Service, has decided to change the name of Russian Kaliningrad to Królewiec in Polish, Rzeczpospolita reports. Also, in connection with this decision, the Kaliningrad region should be called the Krulevets region. The changes came into force in Poland on May 9, 2023.

The commission explained its decision by the fact that the city, which now bears the Russian name Kaliningrad, has the traditional name Krulewiec in Poland. It is noted that the modern Russian name is "artificial" and is not associated with either the city or the region. The decision of the commission also emphasizes that the name associated with the name of M. I. Kalinin is "emotionally negative" for the Polish population.

The Russian side has not yet reacted to such a clearly politicized decision by Poland, however, it is obvious that this can cause a rather serious response from Moscow.
