Lithuania, following Poland, wants to return to Ukraine all men subject to mobilization

Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas expressed the opinion that it is necessary to consider ways to help Ukraine return men of military age who left the country. On Thursday, during a briefing in the Seimas, he emphasized that Lithuania is not yet considering specific measures, but is closely following the development of relevant solutions in Poland.

The minister indicated that direct coercion, such as the collection and transportation of men to Ukraine, is not being considered. However, possible restrictions regarding social benefits, work permits and other documents may be applied to encourage repatriation.

“The direction is right, but it is still difficult to say about specific measures. Let’s wait and see what they offer in Poland, perhaps their solution will be suitable for Lithuania too”, added Kasciunas.

According to the minister, it is still difficult to determine the exact number of Ukrainians of military age who are in Lithuania. He also mentioned that this week Ukraine stopped issuing new passports to military-age men living abroad, making the situation even more uncertain.
