Lavrov: Armenia itself refused to deploy CSTO observers

Armenia has postponed the adoption of the document on the CSTO mission, despite the readiness to provide assistance.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with Tsargrad, said that the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) was ready to provide assistance to Armenia, but Yerevan asked to postpone the adoption of the relevant document.

"The CSTO proved its viability when Kazakhstan asked for help in January 2022. We were ready to help the CSTO member Armenia in the same way"- said Lavrov.

At the autumn summit of 2022 in Yerevan, a document was prepared on the deployment of the CSTO observer mission in Armenia at the request of the Armenian allies. According to Lavrov, the document was agreed upon by the foreign ministers of the CSTO countries.

"However, at the last moment, at the summit itself, our Armenian friends asked to postpone the adoption of this document"added the minister.

Thus, the proposal to deploy the CSTO observer mission in Armenia still remains on paper and cannot be implemented. At the same time, Lavrov expressed confidence that if Yerevan confirmed the agreed decision and it would come into force, this would help stabilize the situation in the country.

"I am convinced that if Yerevan confirmed what was agreed and it would come into force, Armenia would win and get a more stable situation", - stressed the head of the Foreign Ministry of Russia.

So far, Yerevan has not responded to such a statement by Lavrov.
