EurAsian Times: Russian X-22 missile attack on Odessa came as a surprise to Kyiv

The Russian X-22 missile proved the imperfection of Ukrainian air defense systems.

According to the EurAsian Times, the Russian Armed Forces used a rarely used X-22 missile to destroy a Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) depot in Odessa. The authors of the article claim that the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) continue to carry out massive missile attacks on Ukrainian military facilities.

One of the latest incidents is an attack that took place on the night of May 8 in the Odessa region. An X-22 missile struck a warehouse of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the outskirts of Odessa, causing a massive fire. Images from the scene quickly spread around the world media.

The X-22 missile is of particular concern among the Ukrainian military, as they have previously stated that they do not have the means to counter such missiles. Experts note that the X-22 has the characteristics of a ballistic missile and is used by Russia only to destroy strategically important targets.

Vijinder K. Thakur, a veteran Indian Air Force pilot, suggests that Russia may have used the X-22 against the Ukrainian warehouse in connection with Ukrainian forces' attempts to attack Crimea from the region.

The Kh-22 missile (also known as the AS-4 Kitchen by NATO classification) is a Soviet supersonic anti-ship radar missile developed in the 1960s for use on the Tu-22M and Tu-95 bombers. The rocket developer is Raduga, a state design bureau. The X-22 is equipped with a turbojet engine, allowing it to reach speeds up to MAX 4,6 (about 4 km/h).
