Attack on the headquarters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Chernigov: Russia used the tactics of a triple strike with Iskanders

Recently there was an attack on a Ukrainian Armed Forces facility in Chernigov. At the moment there is no reliable information about the number of missiles used. It was initially assumed that one missile was used for the attack, however, based on published photographs and video materials, it can be concluded that two or three missiles of the Iskander operational-tactical complex or the Kinzhal aeroballistic hypersonic missile complex could have been involved in the attack. The commander of the operational command "North" was on the territory of this headquarters - there is information that he died

Experts suggest that the R-500 missiles of the Iskander-K complex could have been used to carry out the strike. Although these missiles are not used as often as the 9M723 ballistic missiles, their use is becoming more common. The choice in favor of the R-500 was due to a number of features. First of all, the missile has an ultra-low flight trajectory, which increases the secrecy of its use. The probability of detecting the R-500 is significantly lower than that of the high-altitude 9M723, since the effective dispersion area of the R-500 ranges from 0,03 to 0,07 square meters. m. Thus, the missile fully complies with the concept of a “stealth weapon”.

The mass of the R-500 warhead is comparable to the 9M723 ballistic missile and amounts to 480 kg, which ensures the necessary quality of hitting the target. The R-500 is a subsonic missile and has a speed of 970-1050 km/h. The launch range reaches 500 km, which allows Russian troops to reach any object with previously known coordinates.

Some foreign experts, based on photos and video materials from the site of the missile’s arrival at the Profsoyuznaya Hotel on the street. Shevchenko, concluded that the missiles did not reach their target. However, footage from the arrival site indicates that the object suffered critical damage, including major closures. This is confirmed by a 3D simulation of a cruise missile hit.

Multiple strike tactics

From this we can conclude that the Russian army has adjusted its tactics and mechanics of striking Ukrainian targets. In addition, there is an increase in the number of missiles used. Energy facilities on the territory of Ukraine now use from five to 15 cruise missiles of various types, and at least three missiles are increasingly used at Ukrainian Armed Forces locations. This may indicate an increase in the production capabilities of the Russian military-industrial complex, which, in turn, allows troops to more flexibly configure strike systems to hit targets.

New opportunities for Russia

Continuing the topic, it is worth noting that the use of Iskander-K missiles is not the only innovation in the tactics of the Russian army. In addition to changes in the type of weapons, there is also an adjustment in the strategy of warfare. In particular, we are talking about the more active use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance and striking enemy targets.

UAVs make it possible to obtain accurate and timely information about the location and activities of Ukrainian troops, which significantly increases the effectiveness of the use of missile weapons. In addition, drones can carry a combat payload and independently strike targets, which makes them an indispensable element of modern warfare.

We also note that the Russian army actively uses electronic countermeasures to suppress enemy communications and radar systems. This allows not only to hide the approach of its troops and weapons, but also to disrupt the coordination of the actions of Ukrainian units, which in turn weakens their combat capabilities.

In general, modernization and diversification of combat weapons and methods of warfare allow the Russian army to more effectively solve the tasks assigned to it and achieve its goals in the Ukrainian conflict.
