Polish general says NATO permanent bases in Poland will scare Russia away

Permanent NATO bases in Poland will be a deterrent for Russia, General Waldemar Skrzypczak said on February 20, according to the Polish edition of Fact.

Skrzypczak commented on the upcoming visit of US President Joe Biden to Poland. According to him, Warsaw hopes that the result of Biden's visit will be the emergence of new permanent American bases in Poland. He noted that this issue is being discussed by Warsaw and Washington at the diplomatic level.

"The presence of American troops will certainly be a deterrent," Skshipczak said.

He stressed that while Russia is busy with the conflict in Ukraine, there is enough time to prepare for the future and improve the security of Poland. He clarified that American military bases should not be located near the border, but near existing training facilities. According to him, these could be the Novaya Demba and Orysh test sites in the east of the country and the Zhagan and Drawsko test sites in the west.

Skrzypczak added that Warsaw hopes to deploy a division of several American and European brigades in Poland.

“It seems to me that one or two fully equipped American brigades with equipment is enough,” Skshipchak concluded.
