Protection against noise in aircraft. The innovative development of the United States.

Air travel in a helicopter or plane can seem very noisy passengers. However, a few days ago, researchers from North Carolina State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology presented the membrane which, when installed in the aircraft, will significantly reduce low-frequency noise that penetrates the outer skin.

New development has not only interested scientists from other countries, but a number of airlines, in particular, to a greater extent this applies to all those who use older passenger aircraft, the most heavily create noise during flights.

At the moment, aircraft designs are made of lightweight materials with a similar honeycomb structure. At its core, this material and its structure are about 75-80% of the total aircraft, in particular, this includes the floor, wings and ceiling. This structure is very effective, as it allows to reduce the weight of the aircraft while increasing the strength parameters, but there are a number of shortcomings, mainly affecting the appearance of noise. Because of the large number of vibrating elements, low-frequency noise is created, which we hear when making another air flight. Initially, it was supposed to solve a similar problem by filling the "honeycomb" with special soundproof material, but this would increase the total mass of the aircraft by 17-20%, which is unacceptable.

Researchers have managed to create a thin and lightweight membrane that covers one side of the honeycomb structure without direct penetration that does not lead to a significant increase in weight. When sound waves hit the diaphragm developed, they are reflected from it, partly coming back into the airspace and partially extinguishing each other.

There is a new development and have another very interesting feature - the membrane significantly reduces the frequency of vibration, thus making them inaccessible to the human ear.

The thickness of the membrane, which is designed to reduce noise in aircraft and helicopters is only 0.25 mm, and at the same time, the weight of the aircraft to increase by up to 3 6%, which is very little. In addition, sound-proof membrane has another good quality - low price, and therefore, it is likely that in the next few years it will find its extensive use in the aircraft industry.
