This is the first purpose-built aircraft to communicate, which entered the Royal Air Force. He began to perform functions that were previously assigned to the modified bombers. Designed according to the requirements A39 / 34 first prototype of the Ministry of Aviation, the company received "Uestland» (Westland) designation R.8, made its first flight in June 15 1936 years.

Three months later, a contract was placed for 144 aircraft, and the first unit was completely re-equipped with Lysander aircraft in June of 1938. By 1939, the production was fully deployed and the Royal Air Force received 66 aircraft. It has also proved useful as a sea rescue plane in the English Channel, and for towing targets. Built around aircraft 1650 "Lysander", including 225 - under license in Canada. From 20 surviving to the present day aircraft "Lysander" (Mk modification III / CT III), all but one, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
