The production of the Piper Cheyenne aircraft was based on the version Piper PA-31Phowever, the aircraft received a new turboprop power plant consisting of two Pratt & Whitney PT-6-28 engines, each capable of developing 620 hp. (basic production version), and provide the aircraft with acceleration to a speed of 525 km / h (maximum flight speed), which was perfect for overcoming distances of 2700 kilometers.

The Piper Cheyenne made its first flight in 1969, however, due to the need to refine the model, this version entered serial production only in 1974. Thanks to the modernization carried out by the aircraft manufacturers, the aircraft could not only provide passenger transportation, taking on board up to 8 people (2 crew members and 6 passengers), but also transport cargo, which was facilitated not only by the interior of the aircraft, but also by the maximum payload amounting to more than 2,2 tons.

Somewhat later, in 1976, aircraft manufacturers from the Piper Aircraft Corporation introduced the Piper PA-31T-1 Cheyenne model, also referred to as Piper Cheyenne I. The aircraft had two less powerful (500 hp each) aircraft engines Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A -II, but at the same time, the version itself was very cheap and easy to maintain.

The Piper Cheyenne II model was slightly modified, in particular, thanks to the refinement of the wing profile, and the installation, compared with the first version of the two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-28 turboprop engines, with a total power of 1240 hp, this aircraft could accelerate to more high speeds, and the installed more spacious fuel tanks allowed the aircraft to fly over distances of up to 3000 km.

In 1982, American aircraft manufacturers introduced the Piper PA-31T-2 Cheyenne IIXL model, the main distinguishing features of which is an elongated fuselage that can accommodate up to 8 passengers on board, as well as a new power plant presented by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-135 with a total capacity of 1500 hp Nevertheless, the model became very expensive, and therefore, the number of aircraft sold was quite small, which is why, after a few more years, the production of this model was finally completed.
