Switzerland

A type: Single-engine piston training aircraft

Crew: Two pilots are arranged one behind the other

Pilatus Pilot R-2, specially developed for operation from high-altitude airfields in Switzerland, relied on German engineering technology obtained under a license for the construction of the Bf 109E aircraft at the end of the 1930-ies. Operated exclusively as a training airplane for the Swiss Air Force, R-2 before the 1960-ies prepared pilots for subsequent transfer to units equipped with Bf 109E and MS.406 aircrafts from Moran-Solnier.

The first 27 aircraft delivered to Switzerland since 1946 year were specialized for training pilots, featuring complete equipment for night flights, oxygen equipment and a full set of radio equipment, and the second batch of 27 machines was a completed training aircraft for training in handling weapons and training observers. Therefore, these aircraft were equipped with one machine gun of the caliber 7,9 mm and underwing holders for training bombs and unguided missiles. Despite the emergence of more advanced R-1950 aircraft in the Air Force in Switzerland since the end of 3, R-2 remained as a training aerobatic aircraft (in the role in which it excelled) until 1981. Like other Swiss Air Force planes sold in 1980 and 1990, R-2 was distributed through auctions, which resulted in a number of them appearing in the registers of a number of European countries.

About six copies appeared in the register of the UK where they were repainted in the colors of the Swiss and the German Air Force and used as the opponents of the growing number of aircraft "Spitfire" and "Mustang", appearing on British air show. Today in the UK able to airworthiness were only one or two aircraft, as the "disease" of the engine of the aircraft As 410A-2 have done their job.
