JAS-39 Gripen

JAS-39 Gripen

The SAAB / British Aerospace JAS-39 Grippen multipurpose combat aircraft is a single-engine monoplane with a simple deltoid wing and a fully adjustable floating slat - Duck aerodynamic configuration (horizontal rudders are placed in front of the wing).

The aircraft is characterized by the natural (deliberate) no wind resistance, to achieve high maneuverability. Through-wire control system (Fly-by-Wire) from three-channel redundant system ensures the aerodynamic resistance of the aircraft in flight. Also in emergency situations provided analog system backup management.

Since the aircraft was developed in Sweden, where the number of plains is limited, the aircraft therefore has excellent takeoff and landing characteristics, allowing it to take off and land on short runways. The brake flaps, together with the slats, provide sufficient aerodynamic braking when landing.

About 30% of the airframe is made of composite materials. The horizontal surface of the wing control, the slats are made of carbon fiber. The fuselage is made of aluminum alloy, an alloy of titanovovogo wings.

Engine JAS-39

The JAS-39 uses the RM12 power plant as the engine. This engine is an afterburner turbojet engine (TRDDF) manufactured by Volvo Aero Corporation. This is a modified version of the F-404-400 engine by the American company General Electric, which is used in the American F / A-18. The RM12 differs from the F404 for increased traction. 54kN in RM12 against 48,9kN in F404 without afterburner and 80,5kN against 78,7kN, respectively, with afterburner. Other differences are greater resistance to ingestion of foreign objects and higher reliability, so that the engine meets the safety criteria for use as a single aircraft engine. Engine operation, including automatic thrust control, depending on the flight mode is controlled by a special computer, ensuring maximum engine performance, which makes it possible to adapt to specific conditions with maximum efficiency. The JAS-39C / D uses a modified Volvo Aero RM12UP engine.

Avionics JAS-39

The aircraft is equipped with a pulsed Doppler radar PS-05 / A operating in the 8-10 GHz frequency range. The radiated power of the radar is 1 kW with the ability to detect targets up to 120 km. The radar can automatically track multiple targets in the upper and lower hemisphere, on land, in the water and in the air, and in all weather conditions. It can also simultaneously aim up to 4 air-to-air missiles at 4 different targets.

Electronic equipment is characterized by a high degree of integration and automation of many functions, allowing the aircraft to conduct combat operations in all weather conditions, day and night.

Armament JAS-39

The main armament is the 27-mm air gun Mauser BK27 with a rate of fire from 1100 to 1700 shots per minute with a stock of 120 cartridges (not available in the JAS 39B double model). JAS-39 has 8 suspension points and is capable of carrying a combat load of a total weight of 4200 kg. The export version of JAS-39NG has 10 suspension points. The carrying capacity in this version is increased to 5200 kg. In the class of air-to-air missiles, it is capable of carrying to the 6 missiles such as AIM-9 Sidewinder or 4 missiles AIM-120 AMRAAM. In the air-to-surface class, the aircraft is capable of carrying up to the 4 missiles AGM-65 Maverick or to 2 long-range missiles TAURUS KEPD 350 / 150, designed to defeat high-security targets. Also JAS-39 is capable of carrying up to two anti-ship missiles RBS-15, developed by the Swedish firm SAAB Bofors Dynamics.

Bombings armament includes up to 4 guided bombs, laser-guided GBU-12 PAVEWAY II or up to 8 laser-guided bombs without Mark 82. It is also capable of carrying and cluster bombs.

Grippen is in service with the following countries: Sweden, Hungary to 2006 years old, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Thailand, South Africa to 2007 years
