Interstate TDR-1 Impact UAV

The idea of creating a radio-controlled combat aircraft belongs to Lieutenant of the US Navy DS Farni, he proposed this project in August 1936. Despite the approval of the idea, she did not receive enough support. Only in 1940 the main components of the UAV were created - a television control system and a radar altimeter. The first experiments conducted in 1941 proved successful, and the following year the American fleet ordered the production of two prototypes, which were called XTDR-1, and a series of drone unmanned aircraft TDR-1. In addition to this order, Naval Aircraft Factory signed contracts for the supply of 100 machines of TDN-1 machines.

The prototype aircraft XTDR-1 scheme design - monoplane with fixed landing gear type and low wing. It equipped the cockpit with the simple set of instrumentation, as the pilot was required to intervene only in case of loss of communication with the machine. The main armament was presented 900-kg bomb suspended under the fuselage, or a torpedo.

In March, it was planned to build 1943 3000 shock drones TDR-1, but due to technical difficulties and low priority programs to fully implement the ambitious production plan failed.

The first squadron of serial TDR-1 was deployed in the Pacific Ocean 1944 year. Team management were represented planes reworked torpedo Grumman TBF-3. From 46 drones sent on a combat mission, we were able to hit targets 18 machines that imperfect system of that time was considered a good indicator. Other works 189 aircraft were sent to storage and not used in combat missions.

Under the scheme TDR-1 suggested that a twin-engine version of the drone XT2R-1. The plan was to build a prototype 2, but the contract was canceled, and the developers have started creating another modification XT3R-1. Mainly, these two versions differed powerplant options: UAV XT3R-1 manned Wright R-975-13A power 450 hp, and an earlier project involves the use of two motors Franklin O-405-2 225 total capacity of just liter. from.

Total managed to build only one prototype XT3R-2 and three XT3R-1. The contract for the production of the production batch of 40 drones canceled.

The TDR-1 project has aroused keen interest among representatives of military aviation. At the USAF airbase in 1943, the serial model of the UAV was tested, which was renamed XBQ-4. Most likely, this machine did not meet all expectations, and the manufacturing company did not receive orders for production. The fate of the BQ-6 model was similar, which remained unfinished at the project stage.
