Work on the Gulfstream IV began in the spring of 1983. From its predecessor, the Gulfstream III, the new jet differs from its predecessor, the Gulfstream III, with a simpler and easier-to-manufacture wing, a longer fuselage, a wider wingspan, more fuel capacity, a cockpit with instrumentation based on multifunction indicators and modern RollsRoyceTauMk611-8 engines, each of them has 61,6kN thrust.

The main difference from the model GulfstreamIII are easy to change design wing, longer fuselage, received six porthole increased by 54 inch span horizontal tail, cockpit flight instruments with EFIS (cathode ray display) and digital electronic aviation equipment.

The first aircraft rolled 11.09.1985, and eight days later he made the first flight. He received a certificate in April after 1987 1400-hour flight test.

The fuselage length of the Gulfstream IV is increased by 1,37m in the standard configuration, thanks to which the passenger capacity is from 14 to 19 people. The fuselage of the Gulfstream IVB is 5,64 m longer, with a passenger capacity of 24 people.

The Gulfstream IV is used by the United States Air Force in three variants under the designation C20. Seven 27-seat C20F aircraft were purchased by the US Air Force for VIP and highest priority cargo transportation; 4 C20G aircraft received the Navy and 1 - the USMC. Two C20Hs were bought by the US Air Force. One copy of Gulfstream IV was delivered to the armed forces of Egypt, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Ireland and Venezuela, and Turkey purchased 3 aircraft.

A variant of the Gulfstream IV aircraft, SRA4, has been operating since 1988. The model is equipped with a cargo door measuring 1,6x2,1m, there is a search radar and an aircraft magnetic detector (MAD) installed in the tail compartment, this model is intended for electronic combat support, electronic reconnaissance and surveillance, medical evacuation, rapid movement of patrol cargo at sea, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

By the end of 1991 it was delivered more than 185 copies GulfstreamIV.
