Accumulated extensive experience in the design and manufacture of amphibians due to the huge number of aircraft JRF Goose, she has built during the Second World War, the company "Grumman" decided to begin studying the issue of replacement of its early production to a whole new type of three times larger. The result was the aircraft G-46 «Albatros» (Albatross), who maintained contact with the previous amphibious company "Grumman" through the use of corporate cantilever high wing and cleaning the main landing gear wheels and in niches on either side of the fuselage.

Both the Navy and the US Air Force were so impressed by the performance of the Albatross aircraft that both of them ordered their own modifications to batch production. The Air Force took the designation SA-16A (later changed to HU-16), and the Navy stopped first on JR2F-1, and then on UF-1 (which later was also changed). The serial aircraft went into operation in July of the year 1949, and the modified SA-16B / UF-2 followed them in 1955 - and a large number of modification aircraft were also modified. "Albatros" participated in the fighting in the Gulf of Tonkin during the first years Vietnamese war. He continued to serve in the US troops (including the Coast Guard) until the 1970-ies. The aircraft was also operated by "friendly" countries. The total number of built "Albatross" was 418 copies.

At the end of 1970-ies the company Grumman and the US operating company "Rizots International» (Resorts International) altered from its military "workhorse" in the civilian airliner. The end result of this alteration was designated G-111. Although alterations were acquired 57 former military aircraft really was remade only 12 copies.
