The Boeing 717 is a twin-engine, narrow-body jet passenger airliner designed for the regional high-frequency short- and medium-haul market. This aircraft should not be confused with the Model 717 prototype aircraft, produced in the 50s by Boeing, on the basis of which the Boeing C-135 Stratolifter tanker aircraft was subsequently released. This Boeing 717 was produced in the 90s and is a continuation of the development of the short-haul DC-9, MD-80 and MD-90 aircraft family produced by McDonnell Douglas. Also the Boeing 717 is one of the smallest passenger jet aircraft built by Boeing Commercial Airplanes to date.

The Boeing 717 is a monoplane with a low, swept wing, circular fuselage and "T" -shaped tail. The wing of the Boeing 717 was based on the wing of the DC-9-34 aircraft. The power plant of the aircraft consists of two BR715-A1-30 engines with a power of 83,2 kN or two BR715-C1-30 engines with a power of 93,4 kN. These turbojet engines manufactured by Rolls Royce are located in the aft fuselage in nacelles. The cockpit is equipped with modern EFIS avionics. The Honeywell VIA 2000 computer system is used to process data about the flight and the state of the aircraft. All information is displayed on six multifunctional screens. In general, the cockpit is similar to that of the Douglas MD-90 aircraft.

Boeing 717 aircraft have two main modifications: the basic version of the Boeing 717-200BGW with a flight range of 2600 kilometers and the Boeing 717-200HGW version with an increased flight range up to 3800 kilometers.

In May 2003 in Geneva it was presented to corporate 60-seater version of the aircraft Boeing 717 Business Express with a range of 5815 kilometers.

In January 2005, citing slow sales, Boeing announced the end of Boeing 717 aircraft. Production ceased in May 2006. The main reason for the discontinuation of the 717 is the increased competition from the Embraer E-Jet and Bombardier CRJ regional jets. Over the entire production period, 156 Boeing 717 aircraft were produced.

As of year 2013, in operation at the aircraft carriers are 148 Boeing 717-200.
