The flight back to Colombo was conducted by the same crew. They received a weather forecast at the destination airport, which did not contain information about dangerous weather phenomena. The estimated flight time was 5 hours 20 minutes.

The crew in 16: 16 switched to the Colombo ATC connection and received information about the actual weather at the Colombo airport. Dispatcher in 16: 40 reported a storm warning, valid up to 14: 15 in the Colombo ATC area. It provided for thunderstorms. He instructed him to contact the dispatcher of the approach, which the crew requested removal and allowed the reduction and approach to the 04 lane. With a sharp deterioration in weather conditions (rainfall, thunderstorms, great turbulence), coupled with the fact that the crew was tired, two approaches to the landing on the course system on the 04 were unsuccessful. The crew began to produce the third approach for landing, this time by the reverse course (to the strip 22). During the investigation, the Commission found:

- Arbitrary shutdown of all four engines in flight took place due to running out of fuel. The number of filled fuel made it impossible in which case leave the planned alternate airport;

- Having regard to flight documentation, much of the flight crew that made with the remnants of fuel, which did not provide care to the alternate aerodrome, as the refueling and loading aircraft preference was loaded at the expense of fuel filling, does not correspond to the requirements of systematic RLE;

- Coating of the crew a month before the crash was 146 hours, almost 2 times more sanitary standards (76 hours).
