In 2009 the company Agusta Westland completed construction of multi-purpose helicopter AW149. Although it is based and is the project AW139 civil helicopters, it has turned a brand new car. Development AW149 conducted to meet the requirements of the Italian Air Force helicopter to the new middle class, applicable for search and rescue operations. It can be used for the transportation of passengers and cargo, communication and control, fire support, surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue, evacuation, etc.

AW149, which is designed with an open architecture, the future can be equipped with advanced systems and equipment to carry out a wider range of jobs and the transition from one task to the other. Besides all this, it can be upgraded to meet future requirements. Setting advanced sensors and data links improves situational awareness in the implementation of operations while taking advantage of the network system.
The volume of the cargo compartment in m³ 12,4 18 can accommodate up to soldiers. There is a cargo hook capable of withstanding 2720 kg, and an external cargo lift to 272 kg. Other new products that applied to AW149:

Complex helicopter weapons can withstand armored targets and carry out fire support for Marines on the battlefield. Agusta Westland in the present time offers on the helicopter market AW-149 adapted version that within Turkey carries the TUHP-145. Government of Turkey ordered 115 multipurpose helicopters. Today the Secretariat of the Turkish defense industry is a contest in which the main AW-149 helicopter opponent will be the American company "Sikorsky" - S-70 «Black Hawk".
