In 2004-2006 AW139 participated in the competition, which has been declared by the US Army for a light utility helicopters (to replace the aging OH-300 58 and UH-1). "AgustaWestland" presented model L3Communications, but lost UH72ALakota, created on the basis of EurocopterES635.

The helicopter AW139 fewer parts and components than earlier machines same company. Its advantages also lie in the availability of systems and the use of integrated avionics, which makes maintenance easier. Modern five-blade main rotor and a retractable landing gear is provided with a fast and smooth flight.

Two engines Pratt & Whitney (Canada) РТ6С67С, capacity on 1531л.с. (1142kW) give the helicopter impressive properties with the largest take-off weight 6400kg. The AW139 has a higher power-to-weight ratio than any other twin-engine medium helicopter of this class, and has a high cruising speed under various load variations, even under rather difficult meteorological conditions. As an option, complete protection from the effects of icing is provided. The helicopter meets the most stringent international standards. This made it possible to classify it as "A" (the ability to fly with a full mass on one motor) without restriction in a wide range of operating conditions, including hot and high-mountainous climate. This useful quality opened the way for the helicopter to the markets of the Far and Middle East.

For a great level of customer support by "of AgustaWestland" Danish aviation company "VAЁg" called the first and only AW139 "Spirit" Agusta ". AW139 reached safety record that is playing to consumers who have a need for the sea to fly, an important role for example, supply transportation between the oil derricks and the shore.
