Brussels Charleroi Airport (Brussels South Charleroi Airport). Official site.

The international airport of Brussels Charleroi is one of the largest aerial harbors in Belgium, with an annual passenger service volume of 7 million 698 thousand passengers (according to 2017 year data).

The air harbor is located about 46 kilometers from the capital of Belgium, on the outskirts of Charleroi, which is why the airport has a double name.

History of the International Airport Brussels Charleroi

As an airfield, the outskirts of the Belgian city of Charleroi began to be used as early as 1919, with the local flying school here, and in 20-30 years, aircraft production was developing rapidly in this area.

During the Second World War, the flying field on the outskirts of Charleroi was practically not used, because this local one was not interested in the allied forces or the German army.

In 50-ies of the last century, in the territory of the flying field of the city of Charleroi, a factory for the production of small aircrafts was built, however, because the manufacturer could not compete with larger aircraft manufacturers, in the 60-70-ies, in the air Harbor appeared airport building, which called to serve the first regular flights.

Nevertheless, in the 70-ies of the last century, the airport was practically not used for passenger transportation, and this air harbor was mostly used by owners of private aircraft, as well as for transportation of small loads and mail.

In the middle of 1991, the airport infrastructure of Brussels Charleroi has been carefully improved and adapted to receive and service passenger flights, making the air harbor international.

In 2001, Brussels Charleroi International Airport served more than 800 thousand passengers, which means that in 2008, an extended terminal was put into operation allowing 3,5 million passengers a year, but due to the fact that the passenger traffic of the air harbor was actively growing, already in 2017 the second terminal was put into operation, which allowed the International Airport Brussels Charleroi to serve annually up to 10 million passengers.

Runways of the International Airport Brussels Charleroi

At the disposal of Brussels Charleroi International Airport there is one 2550 meters runway with asphalt pavement, which allows the air harbor to receive aircraft 2-4 class.

On the territory of the air harbor there are several helicopter landing sites, which allows to take any helicopters of any types.

In the near future, it is planned to increase the length of the asphalt runway to 3200 meters, which will allow receiving and servicing long-haul flights and large aircraft.
