For a number of reasons, the construction of a civil airfield was discontinued, and in 1913 a military base appeared there, which was actively used during the First World War.

In 1919, the construction of a civil airport began on the site of the airbase, however, due to the lack of financial resources, the first terminal appeared here only in 1925 year.

In 1937, the functionality of the airport Bremen has expanded significantly, in particular, there were four runways that crossed each other, which in turn allowed to take the aircraft regardless of the strength and direction of the wind.

During the Second World War, the infrastructure of the Premaren airport was almost completely destroyed by massive bombing. In the period from 1945 year to 1948 year, the airport of the burden was used as the military base of the US Air Force, and the military command of this country almost completely restored the infrastructure of the air harbor.

In 1949, the airport Bremen was again put into operation, and it began to develop quite actively, in particular, the route network of the air harbor grew rapidly, the runways were extended for the reception and maintenance of large aircraft, and at the beginning of the 50-ies, The airport was given the status of an international air harbor.

With the expansion of the route network, the length of the runways of the International Airport Bremen increased, which allowed to serve more passengers, and already in 1989 year, the air harbor served more than 1 million passengers.

As a result of 2017, Bremen International Airport served more than 2,54 million passengers.
