History of the International Airport Berlin Tegel

Berlin Tegel Airport takes its history back in 1906, when the area located near Berlin began to be used to receive and service airships. Due to the fact that during this period of time aircraft did not yet exist, airships were actively used to transport people and goods.

During the First World War, Berlin Tegel Airport was actively used to service military airships and aircraft, however, after the end of hostilities, the airport temporarily ceased to exist, which was due to the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles.

In the 30-ies of the last century, the airport was actively used as a site for launching and testing missiles, as well as for serving military aircraft, however, closer to the end of the Second World War, the airport and its infrastructure were almost completely destroyed.

Since the second half of the 40-ies of the last century, Berlin Tegel Airport was actively used as a military air harbor, while German builders, together with American and French engineers, completely restored the infrastructure in only 90 days.

The first regular civilian flight from Berlin Tegel International Airport was held in 1960, when the French air carrier Air France began operating flights from Paris. Due to the great prospects, the potential of the air harbor grew rapidly, and by the middle of the 60-ies, at least ten flights from Europe were performed from this air harbor.

In 1968, charter flights from Tempelhof were transferred to the International Airport Berlin Tegel, which in turn played a key role in the formation of this air harbor, which served dozens of flights and intensively increased the volume of passenger transportation and cargo transportation.

In the period from 60 to 80, Berlin Tegel Airport received and serviced also military aircraft, which was due to the Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union, however, despite this fact, the international air harbor was actively developing, which was expressed with the improvement of infrastructure and the expansion of the route network.

After the merger of the GDR and the FRG, the volume of passenger transportation of the International Airport Berlin Tegel grew actively, in particular, already in 1991 the volume of passengers served increased to almost 7 million, in 2000 this indicator exceeded the mark of 100 million, 20178 results, the air harbor served 20,46 million passengers.
