Airport Antwerp (Antwerp Airport). Official site.

Antwerp International Airport is located in the north of Belgium, about 5 kilometers from the city of the same name. This air harbor, in spite of its assigned status as an international airport, serves a small number of flights, mostly local (about 55% of the total), due to the geographic location and short runways.

History of the International Airport Antwerp

The official opening of the Antwerp airport took place in 1923, however, the air harbor was mainly intended for receiving and servicing military aircraft, as well as for training future pilots in aircraft management skills.

Since 1928, the first regular flights on local lines began to be operated from the airport of Antwerp, and since 1929, an air service has been established on the international route Antwerp-Hamburg.

With the onset of World War II, the airport of Antwerp was placed under the command of the German Air Force, while the military command of Germany actively used this air harbor to operate its combat aircraft, including for air strikes in Britain.

Since 1946, the airport of Antwerp has started to function again, and for several years, the route network of this air harbor has been significantly expanded, which significantly increased the volume of passengers served.

In the middle of the 60-ies of the last century, an attempt was made to assign the status of an international air harbor to the airport of Antwerp, however, because the airport could not accept large jet passenger airliners, this decision was delayed for a rather long period.

Since the end of the 90-ies of the last century, Antwerp International Airport has been actively servicing business flights, which was primarily due to the ability to receive small jet aircraft, low cost of services, etc.

The runways of Antwerp International Airport

The Antwerp International Airport has two runways at its disposal:

  • Ground, the length of 1010 meters;
  • Asphalt, the length of 1510 meters.

Due to the small length of the runways of the airport of Antwerp, the air harbor can not receive large aircraft, and therefore, the volume of passenger traffic of this air harbor is extremely small - in 2015 this figure was a little more than 221 thousand passengers.

There are helipads on the territory of the airport, which allows receiving and servicing all helicopters without exception.

Infrastructure of the International Airport Antwerp

Despite the fact that the airport of Antwerp serves a relatively small number of passengers, the infrastructure of this air harbor is perfectly developed, in particular, the airport has:

  • Banks, ATMs and payment terminals;
  • Cafes, bars and restaurants;
  • VIP-hall;
  • Post offices;
  • The places of temporary storage of luggage;
  • The shops;
  • Parking of cars;
  • Parking of taxi and public transport;
  • Car rental;

The hotel is not on the territory of Antwerp International Airport, however, due to the fact that the air harbor is located at 5 kilometers from the city, there are no problems with choosing the place of temporary stay.

How to get to the airport of Antwerp?

Antwerp International Airport has excellent connections with the city, in particular, passengers can use public ground transport or taxi services.

Antwerp International Airport Route

Due to the fact that Antwerp International Airport has short runways, the air harbor can not significantly expand its route network, however. the Belgian authorities do not rule out that in the event that investors are ready to invest in the expansion and reconstruction of the airport, in the future, the runways can be additionally extended to 2500 meters.
