Initially, the airfield was created for military use, namely, as a strategically important object of service and refueling of the USSR bombers.

Also 10 kilometers from the airport underground storage of nuclear weapons were built, it was called "Portal" and had full protection against a nuclear attack. Here it was elevated town of Anadyr, or as it was originally called - Magadan-11.

From the very beginning, the airfield was divided into two parts, one was used by the military, and the second was intended for civil aviation. The civilian or eastern part has a terminal building and corresponding buildings for servicing aircraft and passengers.

The military unit existed before 1990. At the same time, for the entire time of its existence various types of attack aircraft and helicopters were based here.

At the moment, "Coal Anadyr 'Airport mostly acts as a transit airport for civilian flights. It should also be noted that today in the military part of the airport are strategic bombers Tu-95.
